Top 50 Songs of 2009: 30 - 21

All right. We're in the middle of the list with the third installment to my countdown of 2009's Top 50 songs. I hope you had time to check out numbers 50 - 41 and 40 - 31. These are all songs I've rocked on my iPod this year. It's great if you were bumping to some of these tracks too, but nothing would make me happier than you discovering some great new artists in this list.

So, here's my favorite songs of 2009 - numbers 30 - 21. They're all after the jump ready for you to stream and download again. Enjoy!

30. Mp3: Girls - Lust For Life

Girls, a San Fransican band that is made up of all dudes, took many by surprise this year. Once people got over their lead vocalist's voice, everyone realized what a great listen their debut full-length, Album, was. The fact that they joined the recent NSFW music video fad didn't hurt either. "Lust For Life" is the first track of the album and a great opener.

29. Mp3: Lily Allen - Back To The Start

Lily Allen always manages to stay in the news with that foul mouth of hers. She's a pop star who's got her strong opinions. We can't blame her for that because when compared to Kanye West, she comes off as an angel. Although I felt her sophomore album, It's Not Me, It's You, was not as tight or as feisty as her debut, it still provides some great tracks. (Nothing can sound awful when The Bird and The Bee's Greg Kurstin is producing!) Who knew apologizing to your sister could sound so catchy?

28. Mp3: Land of Talk - May You Never

Elizabeth Powell leads this band with her powerful vocals and especially on this song. Signed to Saddle Creek, whose roster boasts other strong female vocalists like Orenda Fink, Land of Talk released a fun little EP called Fun and Laughter back in October. This song, "May You Never," has been on repeat on my macbook and iPod ever since.

27. Mp3: Ellie Goulding - Under the Sheets

If you read this blog enough, you already know how obsessed I am with folk-tronica artist, Ellie Goulding. She's young, she's fresh, and she has an innocent approach that somehow comes off dazzling. This is her first official single even though she is still working on her debut album with producer, Mark Ronson.

26. Mp3: The Big Pink - Dominos

When The Big Pink first came onto the scene with this song, it gave music critics everywhere high hopes. This British duo has dished out one of the most diverse albums of the year with songs that are rock, electronica, and everything in between. "Dominos" is one of the more radio-friendly ones, but still a great track.

25. Mp3: Fool's Gold - Surprise Hotel

Forget Vampire Weekend. Fool's Gold is the real deal when it comes to world music. With members from various legit bands including a member from LA's Foreign Born, this track half sung in Hebrew became a favorite summer song of mine.

24. Mp3: Animal Collective - My Girls

Although this song still reminds me of Breakfast at Sulimay's, I still consider it to be my favorite track off of Merriweawther Post Pavilion - and there's so many great ones!

23. Mp3: The Antlers - Bear

Although The Antler's sophomore album, Hospice, centered around a very dark subject, their storytelling through crescendos and diminuendos came off as one of the most gorgeous listens of the year.

22. Mp3: Avi Buffalo - What's In It For

It's been a good year for the young band, Avi Buffalo. Not only did they put out this great song but they also got signed to Sub Pop a couple of months ago. Enjoy!

21. Mp3: Maxwell - Love You

When Maxwell announced his return to the R&B world, I thought - finally! A true artist who will be coming back and saving what is left of this unfortunate genre! Known for his neo-soul style, Maxwell utitlizes his falsetto in the best way possible. The vocal lines in this track are a bit lower, but it's still an amazing song.

That's only the third out of five batches of songs I'll be providing as part of my Top 50 Songs of 2009. You can individually download tracks by clicking on the song titles or download all ten at once by going here.

Check back tomorrow for numbers, 20 - 11!
